Hera claimed it as wife to Zeus, the All-father, and queen of all the gods. Then the three greatest of the goddesses each claimed that it was hers. West edith pattou5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() In the end, she had to defeat the Troll Queen in order to save him. But I remembered the basics, from the fairy tale “East of the Sun, West of the Moon.” Rose went off with a white bear to save her family, but used a candle to try to see his face and then had to travel east of the sun, west of the moon. Since this is my Newbery committee year, I didn’t get to reread East before reading West as I would have liked to do. The Goose Girl has become the start of an entire series since then, but this is the very first follow-up to East. I ordered my own personal copy of both of them, I liked them both so much. ![]() I was so excited when I found out West was coming out! I still remember, approximately 15 years ago when I was working at Sembach Library and a shipment of new books came in that included East, by Edith Pattou and The Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale – two fairy tale retellings that ended up being my two favorite books of the year. ![]() Review written October 13, 2018, from a book sent by the publisher. ![]()

Joan hickson the murder at the vicarage5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Life in the vicarage is not as gentile and peaceful as it would seem as even mild-mannered Reverend Clement is driven to swearing by the stiff-necked attitude of Colonel Protheroe over the church accounts. Overall, I really enjoyed this adaptation. I liked the music too, really pleasant to listen to. ![]() ![]() Joan Hickson really makes this work though, with a simple charm and wisdom she is for me the best Miss Marple, and out of the supporting cast I loved Cheryl Campbell as Griselda, a delightful performance from a great actress. The acting is very good in general, the only weaknesses for me being that James Hazeldine underplaying his role of Lawrence Redding and Polly Adams a little too stiff as Anne. There is a nice witty script and lovely production values. The pace is solid, the pace was a problem I had with "They Do it With Mirrors" which is my least favourite of the series, and the story is well structured. It is not as good as the delightful "A Murder is Announced" but it is very enjoyable, and not only one of the better Joan Hickson adaptations, but a considerable improvement over the Geraldine McEwan version(though that was one of the better adaptations of that series I feel). I really enjoyed this adaptation of "The Murder at the Vicarage". ![]()

Hit me with your best scot5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In an expansive career that drew from Greenwich Village folk and Laurel Canyon pop, Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr., who died on Monday at 84, was embraced by a diverse group of musicians: Elvis Presley and Duran Duran, Lou Rawls and the Replacements. On Dylan’s 1970 album “Self Portrait,” he even recorded Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain,” and the respect was mutual - Lightfoot listened carefully to Dylan’s songs, which instilled in him “a more direct approach, getting away from the love songs,” he once said. Bob Dylan once named Gordon Lightfoot one of his favorite songwriters, and called the musician “somebody of rare talent” while inducting him into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986. ![]()

Bradford wright comic book nation5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In every genre―superhero, war, romance, crime, and horror comic books―Wright finds that writers and illustrators used the medium to address a variety of serious issues, including racism, economic injustice, fascism, the threat of nuclear war, drug abuse, and teenage alienation. Wright offers an engaging, illuminating, and often provocative history of the comic book industry within the context of twentieth-century American society.įrom Batman's Depression-era battles against corrupt local politicians and Captain America's one-man war against Nazi Germany to Iron Man's Cold War exploits in Vietnam and Spider-Man's confrontations with student protestors and drug use in the early 1970s, comic books have continually reflected the national mood, as Wright's imaginative reading of thousands of titles from the 1930s to the 1980s makes clear. Selling in the millions each year for the past six decades, comic books have figured prominently in the childhoods of most Americans alive today. As American as jazz or rock and roll, comic books have been central in the nation's popular culture since Superman's 1938 debut in Action Comics #1. ![]() |
